AboutAutodeskReCapPro.ThisproductstartedasProjectMemento,Autodesk’sattempttobuiltaphotogrammetrytoolfromthegroundup.WhenMementowasstillinbetaitwasfreeandavailableforMacandPC.Whilebothofferedcloudprocessing(stillauniquefeature)onlythePCversionofferedlocalprocessingontopofthat,relyingonNvdiaGPUacceleration.

Whentheprojectcameoutofbetainearly2017itwasrebrandedtoReMake,whichIwroteanin-depthReviewaboutatthetime,andmarketedasastandalonephotogrammetrytoolforcapturingobjectsandsmallenvironments.Itwasofferedasafreeversionforupto50photo’swhichcanbeenoughforsmallobjects(FYI:3DFZephyr(Review)iscurrentlytheonlyPhotogrammetrysolutionthatoffersaFreeversionformax50photos).Ifyouwantedtoloadmorephotos(250atthetime)youcouldgetasubscriptiontoReMakeProfor$30amonthof$300ayear.Butwhilethisgavetheuserunlimitedlocalprocessing,cloudprocessingrequiredthepurchaseofcloudcredits.

ReMakewasagreatpieceofsoftwarethatcombinedgreatphotogrammetryalgorithmswithaninnovativeuserinterfacethatofferedavastcollectionofmesh-editingtools.Infact,Isometimesuseditjustasa3Dscaneditingandcleanuptoolbecauseithandledlargemeshessowell.

UnfortunatelyReMakelivedashortlifebecausetheMacversionwaskilledinMarch,2017andAutodeskdecidedtodiscontinueReMakeasawholeattheendof2017.Sincedecember,theproducthasbeenmovedundertheReCapProsubscription.Thiscosts$40amonthor$350ayear.ThisalsogivesyoutheoriginalReCapProsoftwaresuite,whichfocusesonprocessinganregistrationoflaserscandataforconstructionandengineeringpurposes(it’salsothededicatedsoftwarefortheinnovativeLeicaBLK360laserscanner).Tofitwithinthatconcept,ReCapPhotogotnewsupportforarealphotogrammetryfeatures.

Intheend,ReCapPhotoisstilljustrebrandedversionofReMake.YoucannowalsolaunchitbychoosingPhototo3DinReCapProbutitinstallsasaseparateapplicationthatcanbelaunchedindependently.
