JohnBuehler,fromVeroSoftware,saysDesignerrepresentstheCADframeworkthatwillbecomethecoremodellingengineforallCAMapplications.“It’snotdependentonhavingaseriesofparametersthatdriveit,orafeaturetree.Itprovidesaveryquick,dynamiceditingandmodellingenvironment,whereuserssimplysketch,drag,hold,pushortwist,tocreateandmodifymodels.Hesayshavingthissingleandunifiedsolutionforsolids-baseddesignsgivesVerouserstheflexibilityofreceivingaCADfilefromanysource,forreviewormodification.

“Somemodellersdonotmaintainadequatetolerances,sothemodelswilloftenrequireadegreeofrepair–orifthey’veonlybeenroughlymodeledtheremaybegapsinthegeometry.DesignerallowsuserstoreadthenativeCADdata…cleanupanypoorgeometry,closethegaps,stitchitintoasolid,andthenmakemodificationsthatareimportanttotheCAMprocess,suchasthesuppressionoffeatures,orthemodificationofdraftangles.

“Generally,thosemodificationsdonotimpactonapart’sdesignorperformance,butwillmakeitmoremanufacturable.”

WhileDesigneroperatesseparatelyfromtheCAMsystem,therearetriggerswithinitwhichwilllaunchCAM,andthereisfullassociativitybetweenthetwo.“Fromfixturedesigntoquickandeasypartmodification,DesigneristrulytherightCADforCAM,byprovidingafullsetoftoolstofillthegapbetweenthetwo.”

MajorDesignerFeatures:
-DirectModelling.Thisfreestheuserfromtheconstraintsofaparametricmodellingsystem.Ratherthanmodifyingalengthyseriesofparameterstomakeadesignchange,desiredshapescanbeobtainedbysimplypushing,pullinganddraggingthegeometry.“Thesechangescanbecompletelyfree-form,ordrivenbynumericincrementsandmeasurementstakenfromexistinggeometry,”saysJohnBuehler.“It’snolongernecessarytoknowhowtheoriginalmodelwasconstructed,anddesignchangesaren’tconstrainedtotheoriginalmethodsofcreation.

-ImportModelHealing.Smallgapsbetweensurfacesonimportedmodelscanbeautomaticallyhealed,preventingthetimeconsumingneedtorebuildverysmallsurfacepatches.Wheresurfacesarecorruptormissing,Designerautomaticallycreatestheedgecurvegeometry,makingiteasytorebuildnewfaces.“Andclosingasurfacemodeltoproduceasolidbodyeliminatesconstructionproblemslaterintheprocess.

-FeatureSuppression.IncomingCADdataoftenincludesgeometryfeaturesthataren’tnecessaryforCAM,orwon’tbecreatedbythemachiningprocess.”JohnBuehlersayswhilemanypost-machiningprocessesarefrequentlyrepresentedonthemodel,andareimportantforCADdesignastheywillultimatelybeneededinthefinalcomponent,theycanhinderCAMprogramming.“Designersimplyremovesthemandcansavethemforlateroperationsifrequired,withjustamouseclick.

-ModelSimplification.Aswellasfeaturesuppression,thegeometrycanalsobesimplifiedatvariousstagesofthemachiningprocess.Removingportionsofthemodel,suchasintersectingfeatures,speedsupmachiningandprovidesbetterresults.

-PowerfulSketching.Designer’ssketchcapabilitiesmakeiteasytocreate2Dshapesusingfree-forminput,whichinteractswithsurroundinggeometry.

-GeometryforMachining.Designer’smanygeometrycreationtechniquesareessentialtothemachinistformodelpreparation.“Holecappingisagoodexampleofthis,”hesays.“Itcanbeusedtocapanythingfromasimpledrilledhole,toacomplexopencavity,withjustafewmouseclicks.Andanextensiverangeofcurvecreationroutinesvastlyimprovesboundaryformation.

-Workingwith2DData.AfterimportingDXFandDWGfiles,existing2Ddatacanbetransformedintoa3Dmodelbyreusingprofilesfromtheoriginaldata,automaticallycreatingsketchprofileregions.

-ExtensiveRangeofCADInterfaces.DesignerworkswithdatafromalmostanyCADsupplier.“Verylargefilescanbehandledwithease,andcompaniesworkingwithcomplexdesignswillbenefitfromthesimplicitywithwhichtheircustomer’sCADdatacanbemanipulated.”
