SpeedTree8forUnityisnowavailableasasubscription,indie,andfullgameslicense,bringingPBRgoodnessandadvancedfeaturestoUnity2018.3.Bydefault,SpeedTreewillexportwithamaterialsetupfortheStandardpipeline,butstillfacessomechallengesforthosewhowanttousethebetaHighDefinitionRenderPipeline(HDRP)orLightweightRenderPipeline(LWRP)pipeline.

Unity’sHDRPandLWRPbifurcatetheengineintotwopresetscriptablerenderpipelines(SRP)andoffergreaterflexibilityincustomizingtheUnityenginetofityourneeds.Whilethissolutionprovidesmanymuch-neededfeatures,it’snotwithoutitschallenges.Eachrenderpipelinerequiresadifferentmaterialsetupandthesematerialsarestillverymuchindevelopment.

WhilewehaveplansforSpeedTreemodelstoworkwiththeShaderGraph,wedonotcurrentlyhavetheabilitytoapplyourvertexanimatedSpeedTreewind,huevariation,orsmoothLODtransitionsinanySRP,whilethe“Standard3D”pipelineintoUnityworksgenerallyasexpected.

We’reworkingwithUnitytocontinuetodeveloptheUnityIntegrationandhopetohaveastablesolutionsoon.

Butdon’tpanic,wehaveafewtricksforgettingaSpeedTreeupandrunninginHDRPrightnow.

TextureChanges:
1.HDRPMaskTexture:HDRPusesadifferentmaskthanourstandardUnitypackingoption(readmorehere).

2.ThicknessMap:Transmission(usedforthintranslucentobjects)inHDRPusesathicknessmaptoevaluatedepthonflatplanes.Tooutputathicknessmap,wesimplyexportoursubsurfaceasagrayscaletexture(readmorehere).

AlternatePacking:
1Wemadeanadditionalpackingoptionthatcanbedroppedyourinstallationfolder(SpeedTreeGames8.3->texture_packing).
2.Onexport,besuretoselectUnityHDRPforthetexturepackingtype.

ImportingtheSpeedTree:

-EitherexporttheSpeedTreeModeldirectlyintoyourUnityproject’sassetfolderorcopythefilesintotheprojectfolderoncecomplete.

-ThefirststeptoprepthetreeforHDRPistomakesurethatyourtexturesaretherightfiletype.WhileUnitywillautomaticallydetectandoffertofixthenormalmaps,maskandthicknessneedafewquickadjustments.andmanymore..
