UltraDefragcandefragmentbothFATandNTFSdiskswithjustacoupleofrestrictions:
-ItcannotdefragmentFATdirectories,becausetheirfirstclustersareimmovable.
-Itcannotdefragmentmasterfiletables(MFT),becausetheirfirst16clustersareimmovable.

However,theprogramtriestooptimizethosefilesplacingtheirfragmentsclosetoeachotherbehindthefirstone.UltraDefragcanbeusedonWindowsXP/Vista/7/8/10aswellasWindowsServer2003/2008/2012/2016.Elderversionsoftheprogram(priortov7)canbeusedonWindowsNT4.0andWindows2000aswell,withsomelimitations.AdditionallyUltraDefragforLinuxexistswhichisanindependentportoftheprogrambasedonNTFS-3Gcapabilities.

Algorithms
Firstofalltheprogramanalyzesthediskgatheringcompleteinformationaboutfilesandfreespacegaps.Then,dependingontheselectedaction,theprogrameitherdefragmentsthediskorperformsitsoptimization.Defragmentationeliminateslittlefragmentsjoiningthemtogether.Fulloptimizationmovesallsmallfilesandfragmentstotheendofthedisktoreleasesomespaceinthebeginning.Thenitmovesthemback,sortedbyauserdefinedcriteria,tospeedupaccesstogroupsofsmallfiles.Bydefaultfilesaresortedbypathinascendingorder.AdditionallyFATdirectoriesandNTFSmasterfiletablesgetfixedupasmentionedabove.

Quickoptimizationisthesamebutitskipsalreadysortedoutfiles.Therearealotofoptionsavailabletocontroltheprocess.Forinstance,theprogramcanfilteroutmeaninglessfilesandnevermovethem,whichisprettyuseful.Additionally,adeepactionoptionisavailablewhichdisablesallfilterscompletely.Thiswaytheprogramwillprocessallfilesonthedisk.Usuallyit'snotnecessaryasitjustincreasesprocessingtimewithoutanysignificantimprovementofdiskperformance,butinsomecasesit'sveryhandy.

Forinstance,whenyouhavealotofsmallfreespacegapsscatteredacrossthediskandwanttorejointhemtogetherorjustwanttopackfilesastightaspossiblebeforepartitionshrinking,thedeepactionoptioncombinedwiththefulloptimizationwilldothejobwell.Allalgorithmsareavailableeitherfromatraditionalgraphicalinterface,orfromacommandline(console)interfacesuitableforbatchscriptingandscheduledtasks.Additionallyaboottimeinterfaceexistswhichhelpstodefragmentfileslockedmostofthetime.

Files
UltraDefragdoesn'tcountemptyfilesbecausetheyhavenofragmentsatall.ThesameappliestosmallfileslivinginsideofMFTrecords.Usuallytheyaresmallerthan1KBandrequirenoclustersoutsideofthetable,thusnofragments.However,whenyourightclickthosefilesinWindowsExplorerandselectDefragmentwithUltraDefragtheywillbecountedtoavoidambiguity.Additionaltreatmenthavefilesexcludedfromdefragmentation.Filesmarkedastemporarybytheoperatingsystemarealwaysexcluded,otherscanbecutoffbypath,sizeandnumberoffragmentsusingfilters.

Theprogramnevertreatsthosefilesasfragmentedeveniftheyactuallyare.Forhigherperformanceusuallyitdoesmakesensetoexcludenotonlytemporarycontent,butalsolargefragments.Forexample,whenyouwatchamovieWindowsneedsjustacoupleofmillisecondstoadvancefromonelargefragmenttoanother,whiletheoverallwatchingtimeisusuallyabout2hours.Thus,youwillneversufferfromlargefilefragmentswhenyouwatchamovie.
