Traditionally,earthquake-resistantdesignhasbeenstrength-based,usinglinearelasticanalysis.Sinceinelasticbehaviorisusuallyallowedforstrongearthquakes,thisisnotentirelyrational.Strength-baseddesignconsidersinelasticbehavioronlyimplicitly.Displacement-based(ordeformation-based)designconsidersinelasticbehaviorexplicitly,usingnonlinearinelasticanalysis.Displacement-baseddesignrecognizesthatinastrongearthquake,inelasticdeformation(orductility)canbemoreimportantthanstrength.PERFORM-3Dallowsyoutousedisplacement-baseddesign.
