素描是進入繪畫大門的第一步。素描也可以稱之為造型藝術。是用一種顏色或幾種顏色，把所描繪的客觀對象，高度概括成黑白灰，主要還是指單色。利用科學的透視、黑白灰色調規律，通過素描造型手段，把線條或光影色調組織起來，在一張白紙上塑造一個假設的空間畫面。練習素描，就是要把所畫物體，從生活中提煉出來，除去客觀物象的完整性、獨特性等，使它服從於繪畫秩序，轉變成繪畫語言，最終變成畫面造型的一部分。素描是美術特長生考學前，所要練習的基本功。素描也是高考美院所要必考的科目。開始練習時，要強調對形體結構的理解，明暗之間的關係，線與面所表達的空間透視變化，以及對虛實、明暗、強弱變化的把握。熟練以後，就可以利用輪廓結構、線面穿插、調子節奏、虛實透視、工具選用等，更深一層的研究用素描這種繪畫語言，表現描繪對象的精神內涵了。素描是視覺空間、客觀空間、畫面空間的完美結合。
